Meniscus tears are a common and challenging injury.  The great news is that most patients get better with physical therapy.  BMJ published a systematic review (high  level research) noting that the authors “strongly recommend” conservative treatment over arthroscopy for “nearly all” people with tears.  This was reviewed by a mix of health care providers including physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, a rheumatologist, a general practitioner, general internists, epidemiologists, methodologists, and patients themselves.

We, at McVay PT, have many ways of working toward meniscal healing.  These include LASER for tears close to the edge, US, e-stim, and straight plane strengthening for the quadriceps in particular.  Many do not realize that the hamstrings attach into the meniscus, so caution must be used in stretching and strengthening this muscle group.
